Hans Rotman, born in Rotterdam 1954, studied violin in Utrecht, conducting in Siena with Franco Ferrara and with Kurt Masur in Weimar. After winning the Daphne Proud Fellowship Award under jury of Seiji Ozawa, Rotman was invited to the famous Tanglewood Music Festival of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1985. His Concert together with Leonard Bernstein in a nationwide telecast tribute to Aaron Copland was a highlight in this festival.

Since his notable succes in Amerika, Hans Rotman has conducted a wide- and especially contemporary- opera and symphonic repertoire in Germany, Belgium and Holland.

 

Rotman, conducting the Radio Orchestra Brussels BRTN since 1995, appeared for TV in the popular primetime TVseries „Firebird“ in 1996 . These concerts as well as his „Young People Concerts“ for the Royal Flemish Philharmonic won him international acclaim .

 

Hans Rotman composed several works for musictheatre. „Torre de Canela“, on a poem by Federico Garcia Lorca, was produced by Belgium TV. His Radio opera „Erosion“ was nominated by Belgium Radio for he Prix d´Italia. The famous actor Klaus Maria Brandauer commissioned Rotman to compose the music for his Mozartprogram 2006.

 

2007 Rotman was invited to write the music for the international festival Musica Religiosa in Cuenca (Spain)-recorded for Universal.

 

As artistic director of „Impuls“ Hans Rotman brings the six Orchestras of the german federal State Sachsen-Anhalt together in a new festival to promote contemporary music, starting in 2008.

Hans Rotman est né à Rotterdam en 1954. Après des études de violon et de composition à Utrecht, c’est à Sienne qu’il suivit l’enseignement de la direction d’orchestre auprès de Franco Ferrara et de Kurt Masur.

 

Après avoir remporté la Daphne Proud Fellow Award en 1985 devant un jury présidé par Seiji Ozawa, Hans Rotman participa au festival de Tanglewood, créé par l’Orchestre Symphonique de Boston.

Un concert qu’il dirigea en compagnie de Leonard Bernstein et qui fut retransmis à la télévision constitue un des temps fort de cette collaboration.

 

A la suite de ces succès américains, Hans Rotman a pu diriger un large répertoire aux Pays-Bas, en Belgique et en Allemagne, notamment dans le domaine de l’opéra et de la musique nouvelle. Ses interprétations de deux opéras de Mozart ont été enregistrées pour la BRT, l’ORF et la ZDF.

On connaît bien Hans Roman en Belgique grâce à sa longue collaboration avec l’Orchestre de la Radio de Bruxelles, dans le cadre d’une série d’émissions commentées sur la musique nouvelle, ainsi que par ses fameux « Young-People-Concerts » avec l’Orchestre Royal Philharmonique des Flandres.

 

Hans Rotman est également compositeur, ayant écrit notamment de nombreuses pièces pour la scène : Torre de Canela d’après Federico García Lorca (Arte/BRT télévision), l’opéra radiophonique Erosie (nommé pour le Prix d’Italia), Spiegelgrund (Volkstheater Wien).

 

En 2004, il a été engagé par la Staatskapelle Halle et le festival Weimarer Kunstfest pour promouvoir la musique nouvelle auprès du grand public et particulièrement des jeunes.

Il est également le directeur artistique de Impuls, le nouveau festival pour les musiques contemporaines dans le land de Sachsen-Anhalt, qu’il a fondé en 2007.
